Family Medicine Residency, Iranian Doctor

I am a physician and a psychiatrist from Iran who is now practicing in America. I follow the famous Persian poet, Ferdowsi, insofar as I see the mind as a mirror of the body. When someone is ill, I see their suffering written all over their face. Since I have continued to mature as a physician, now 47, and almost finished raising my own family, I have gradually become more and more attracted to the idea of transitioning into the practice of family medicine. In this area, I have done much personal study to stay abreast of developments and significant issues, especially concerning children and adolescents.

I have always wanted to practice family medicine and also to have the privilege of continuing to learn about the unique issues facing our geriatric patients, and helping families to cope with senior issues. The more I age myself, the more that I find an unusual attraction to treating elderly patients, finding that exceptional patience to make the treatment successful. I feel strongly that my extensive experience as a psychiatrist will help me to excel in your family medicine residency program because of the close ties between these two areas of medicine.

One of my instructors in medical school was a family practitioner who had finished medical school in the USA. I found her to be incredibly inspiring, particularly her discussions of comprehensive medical care and the importance of building long-term relationships with patients. In fact, I would have pursued a specialty in family medicine at that time, but this area was still very underdeveloped in Iran at the time; so, I chose psychiatry because of its holistic nature and direct impact on family life.

I graduated from medical school in1990 from Iran’s University of Medical Science and became board certified in psychiatry in 1993, ranking 4th in my class. I have learned that the essential thing in medicine is always to be a whole human being and hold the patients’ hands and simultaneously that we touch their hearts. I practiced medicine in Iran for many years over a period that included the war with Iraq and the trauma associated with a significant earthquake, on average, almost every five years. Thus, I feel that I have grown up in medicine treating trauma. Now, I hope very much to continue to work with victims of accidents and disease with particular attention to the impact on families, treating families together as a holistic unit.

I am a highly respected physician with great empathy and take great pride and satisfaction from her work. My colleagues sometimes compliment me on my communication skills and caring attitude. I look forward to working long hours and building a long-term relationships with patients, working along with my colleagues to educate patients and their families concerning the many challenges that they face.

As an Iranian woman, I find that I am wildly successful in my work with immigrants to the USA and that my Middle Eastern culture helps me to gain the confidence of people who have immigrated to the USA from all over the world. As a result, I especially look forward to treating the members of minority populations. I also look forward to adopting many of the skills that I have learned over the years in psychiatry to the field of family medicine, helping to provide better management and treatment in cases of psychosomatic illness such as blood pressure, headache, etc. I feel strongly that a good family practitioner is a people-oriented professional who must be incredibly empathetic and an excellent listener, the traits to which I have paid particular attention throughout my career as a psychiatrist. At this point in my career, I especially crave the closeness of the physician with the family in this area of medicine, giving one’s all, attention, compassion, etc., to the critically important role of the family in medical care .I thank you for considering my application.
