Fellowship Infectious Diseases, Canada, Saudi

I am a young woman doctor from Medina, Saudi Arabia, and I currently hold the position of Senior Registrar in General Medicine at XXXX Hospital, Medina, Saudi Arabia. I have now been practicing medicine for eight years, and I am an accomplished and highly regarded physician who is recognized as a specialist not only in General Internal Medicine but also in Emergency, Medical Intensive Care, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, and especially Gastroenterology.

I chose to specialize in the area of infectious disease because infections are common causes of disability and death in my country and can almost always be successfully treated if recognized early, and patients’ health fully restored. I chose HIV as a sub-focus because of its novelty and the significant threat that it represents to global society, especially in Africa. I see a huge need for physicians and researchers to continue to join this fight, geared towards new developments in treatments, at the same time that we never lose sight of our primary goal of prevention. What is probably most unique about my application to your competitive fellowship program in infectious diseases is the fact that, as a result of, my country is the destination for so many pilgrims each year; we take care of patients with a wide variety of infectious diseases. We face significant, unique challenges that also result in unique research opportunities.

I greatly respect the Canadian health care system, and I am incredibly excited about the prospect of learning so many new things in your program that will inspire me for a lifetime of hard-wired in our battle against infectious disease. I hope to learn a great deal in your program that will eventually help me to make significant contributions to disease control in my country. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) still recommends that all visitors to Saudi Arabia be vaccinated for Hepatitis A because they risk infection “through contaminated food and water,”  as well as getting vaccinated for Typhoid, “especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.” Clearly, we have a great deal of work to do in Saudi Arabia in the way of preventing and treating infectious diseases. It is for this reason that I hope to be able to bring the full extent of my passion and drive in this area to your program, and to have the opportunity to give my all to your distinguished program.

I have extensive experience studying DNA, lipids, acids, and cell activity. I hope to use this knowledge to help me better understand in the future the relationship between DNA and infectious disease, how when and why our immune systems become compromised, and how this is related to our genetic codes. I am most attracted to your fellowship program at XXXX University, in particular, because I see it as one of the finest institutions of its kind, with some of the finest resources in the world for cutting-edge research. I feel strongly that medicine is a global enterprise, and I hope to be able to contribute to the diversity of your program as an Arab woman, bringing the West and the Middle East together through dedication to science, human life, and the progressive mitigation of human suffering and premature death at the hands of infectious disease. I thank you for your consideration of my application.
